Getting an interview could very well hinge on your ability to write a good cover letter. Your resume is generally considered a vehicle to make a good first impression on a potential employer. However, a great cover letter will encourage an employer to call you to hear more.
If you can, address the letter to the recruiter or hiring manager. This shows that you have done some research about the company. At the very least, addressing your letter to an individual allows you to make a pitch directly to someone who matters within the company.
Tell the recruiter in a few sentences why you want the job. Mention a product that the company makes, its commitment to the community or its status as an industry leader. Perhaps you like the fact that they are a growing company. You can grow your career while helping the company grow even larger.
Talk about your experiences in prior jobs. Why are you qualified for this job? Mention a few of your career highlights. Maybe at your last job you worked with the CEO on a community outreach project. Mention that you were the youngest person in company history to be promoted to VP of sales. Anything that will jump off the page should be included in this section.
Convey Enthusiasm
Don't use too many buzzwords. It will just sound boring and uninspired. Instead, use words that convey enthusiasm and passion for your work. Make the hiring manager so excited about your personality that he wants to talk to you yesterday. Check your cover letter for any spelling or grammar errors. You won't sound like a professional if there are a lot of mistakes.
You want to jam all of this information into one page or less. This means that you have only a few sentences in each paragraph that you write. Do your best to be concise and to the point. You will have a chance to discuss the details when you come in for an interview.
Your cover letter is going to be your pathway to a job interview. Come off as a knowledgeable person who can't wait to work for that particular company. If you can follow through with that, you will find that you have a good chance of landing a job at the company of your choice.
