Letter to Increase Credit Card Limit (Free Sample)
Credit cards, they can be a necessary evil with today’s economic woes. Sometimes if a person has less than perfect credit, a credit card company will give them a small limit with the ability to increase after a timely payment history is established.

Even with the best credit scores, some companies want people to request a credit line increase themselves, rather than just giving them one. While this depends on the credit card, it is usually better to ask if you want a credit card increase.

Valuable Options

There are many times in life when asking for a credit card increase can be a valuable option. For starters, if there is a large vacation coming up, or there is some major house repair that needs done, it is best to start by asking for additional money on a credit line rather than seeking a new bank loan.

Most credit card companies will check your credit before they will offer an increase, or they may grant one on merit alone. Again, it all depends on the credit card company.

Personal Questions

They may want to ask some personal questions before granting an approval of this nature, like how much money you make and what the extra is needed for.

Customers, who have never made a late payment and have a good record, usually have an easier time getting an increase than those who have a sloppy payment history. The approval amount may also be granted based on the amount and the ability to repay.

To draft this type of letter, start with the basics. Give the credit card number you wish to increase the limit on. Ask for a specific amount of increase.

If you have a $500 card, you may want to go up to $1,000. Asking to make a drastic jump like from $500 to $2,500 may be a bit unrealistic, but there’s no harm in trying. This is a formal letter and should be addressed as such.

Start with your name and address in the upper left hand corner. Next will be the date and lastly the credit card companies name and address. A subject line is acceptable in this type of letter. The first paragraph should state how long you have been a customer of that bank.

The goal here is to establish precedence and show that you have been faithful to the company. If the account has always been in good standing, say so. If there have been some bad times, explain why, and be prepared to show documentation.

State what the money is needed for and sign it. It doesn’t have to be long and drawn out, just get to the point. Give contact information where the company can contact you to discuss any questions they might have.

While they may have your info on file, don’t assume it is always correct. They may need to contact you to approve the credit card limit increase.

Re: CONSUMER'S ACCOUNT NUMBER

Dear Credit Card Company,

I have been a long standing credit customer of [Credit Card Company]. When I first opened my account back in 20xx, I had a small $500 limit.

Overtime I have not asked for any increases and have never even come near to reaching my credit limit. Recently, we purchased a home that needs major renovation. Because of the extreme costs of these ventures, I am asking for a credit line increase on my account.

Currently, there is a balance of $231 on my account. I would love to have an increase to around $2,000. This money will be used to help put in a new furnace system in my home. The interest on my credit card is cheaper than the interest the store has for financing.

Because I have had such good luck in the past, I am looking to continue my business with your credit card company in the future. You can always count on me to take care of my bills, and to make sure to stay below my credit limit.

Can you please review my account and grant this request? If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [555-288-0989]. I can be reached anytime.

Sincerely,

Consumer’s Signature
Consumer’s Printed Name
