Writing a Curriculum Vitae (CV) for a Job Application (with Sample)
Use this sample curriculum vitae (cv) as a template for your formal notification.
A curriculum vitae, or CV, is a more detailed synopsis of educational or employment history than a resume. For those who are interested in learning how to write a CV, focus should be on keeping information clear, concise, complete and up-to-date. CV’s should be updated regularly as developments in education and career unfold.
A CV is used in the U.S. in place of a resume primarily when in pursuit of academic, educational, scientific or research positions and should include a summary of educational and academic achievements, teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, honors, awards, affiliations, and other details pertinent to the position being sought.
For an individual learning how to write a CV, it is important to keep in mind CVs are generally longer in length than a resume. Focus should be on abilities as a teacher, researcher, and publishing scholar within the given discipline. Bulleted lists occur less frequently in CVs than in resumes and conciseness and ease of readability should guide content.

Include a name and contact information, academic and related employment, and research projects in a CV. A reference list may be included as part of a CV, or given separately at a later time as requested by the interviewer. The first item on a CV is typically a candidate’s education listed in reverse chronological order.
After that, the most important information should come first. The earlier in the document the information comes, the more emphasis is placed on it. Determine where strengths lie depending on what the job requires.
Remember, in determining how to best present a CV there is not one standard format. For a research position, research projects, presentations and publications are important. Likewise, for a teaching position, a teaching background would be important.
Those writing a CV should find as many examples as possible in their chosen discipline and use those as guidance on how to write their CV. Use the internet or ask a colleague. A model CV should not be followed exactly, but used as a source for strategic presentation of information.
